Henry Moore (English) 1898-1986
Family Group, 1948
Pencil with Wax Crayon, watercolor, and ink, 20 5/8 x 24 1/4 in.
National Gallery of Canada, Ottowa
Henry Moore was a sculptor who usually made statues
of families. Since making sculptures is very tiring,
Henry Moore would need to rest every few months and
paint or draw. For Family group, he started with wax
crayons and then painted in watercolor. His drawing
is an example of surrealism. I like it because it looks
like a 3-D sculpture of stone, not a drawing on paper.I think
texture is a key part in this painting because this painting
looks like a sculpture but it is drawn on paper. I think this
painting is supposed to repucent a family sitting on a curved
bench together.
Andy Warhol (American) 1928-1987
Cambell's Soup Can, 1964
Silkscreen on Canvas, 35 3/4 x 24 in
Leo Castelli Gallery, New York
http://jssgallery.org/Other_Artists/Andy_Warhol/Cambells_Soup_Can.htm

I think this is a fine example of imitationalism. Andy
was born during the great depression. Perhaps he
drew this soup can as a symbol of nourishment. He was mostly
a pop art artist. He was the leading artist in the Pop art
movement. Before he was famous, he was a fashion
illustrator. I love how this painting is on silkscreen
because painting on silkscreen is hard. Color is one of the
amazing features in this painting because the color is strong and
solid.
Utagawa Toyokuni (Japanese) 1769-1825
Geisha and Maid, 1790
Wood Block Print, 37" x 14"
Freer Gallery, Washington, D.C.
http://www.reginaopera.org/butter.htm
Utagawa Toyokuni was a great master of ukiyo-e.
He is known for his Kabuki actor prints.
He was one of the heads of the renowned
Utagawa school of Japanese woodblock artist.
Toyokuni was apprenticed to the first head of the Utagawa house
I think this is a perfect example of an artwork
that is not from my culture. I think the artist
Utagawa Toyokuni, painted this picture because
in 1790 ships from the USA were going to
Japanese shores to bring people to Ameria. I think
this painting repusents two ladies in the standing on a dock
trying to call a boat in. I like how the background
is very detailed and nicely balanced. When I see his
painting the color and texture popsout at me,
because all the color blends together.
Grant Wood (American) 1891-1942
American Gothic 1930
Oil on beaver board, 74.3 x 62.4 cm
Art Institute of Chicago
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Gothic
I think this is a good art piece form my culture. Grant Wood
is the artist of this wonderful painting. He saw a farmhouse in
Eldon, Iowa, while he was looking for new ideas. He wanted to
place a man and a woman in front of a medieval window. I think
think that was good placement. When I see this painting the
color pops out at me. I think this painting is supposed to repusent
the American farmer and his wife on a old-fashion American farm.

Vincent Van Gogh (Dutch) 1853-1890 Starry Night, 1889
Oil on canvas, 73 x 92 cm
Museum of Modern Art, New York City

http://www.answers.com/starry+Night?cat+entertainment

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist.
His paintings and drawings include some of the world's
best known, most popular and most expensive pieces.
Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a firm of art dealers.
This artwork is a fine example of emotionalism. This painting has
such fine brush strokes. Even though this picture is called Starry Night
the first thing I see is the tree in the middle of the painting. I think it is
very good placement to put the church with the skyscraper in the middle
of the painting. The line and texture pop out to me when I look at this
because the line twists togather forming a good texture. I think this
supposed to repusent the night sky turning into the day sky.

Faith Ringold

Faith Ringgold (American) b. 1930, The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles, 1991Acrylic on canvas, tie dyed, pieced fabric border, 74 x 80 inches, Private Collection

Faith Ringgold was a painter. She is best known for her story quilts. Her art work has been in many museums throughout the world. She has recived over 75 awards. The painting is very colorful. It has a lot of sunflowers in it. Many African-American strong women
are holding a quilt with many sunflowers on it. Van Gogh is in the backround holding a basket of flowers. I think this painting is a form of formalism.
